BALLET IS FOR EVERYBODY
PUBLICATION DESIGNFun fact about me: I danced professionally at Oregon Ballet Theatre II before entering the design field, and have a BFA in Ballet. I recently began taking open ballet classes again, and was reminded how fun and joyful dance can be, while also being an excellent form of exercise. I designed and printed this zine for sale at the Portland Zine Symposium to encourage others to enroll in their first beginner ballet classes.
I wanted the zine to reflect the elegance, romance, and restraint of ballet, while also showcasing my skills in typography and page layout design. Custom title treatments head each page, and I drew imagery from my favorite ballets and from famous films featuring ballet. The end pages and lily of the valley watermark on the cover were pulled from vintage sources on Flickr and Smithsonian Open Access.
I chose a single-color palette to help the zine feel even more elegant. The blue shade I selected is inspired by my favorite ballet, George Balanchine’s Serenade, an abstract ballet featuring monochromatic blue costumes with flowing, romantic skirts. A full spread photograph of the ballet is featured on the page 18-19 spread.
